Deaccessions

Thank you for visiting our Deaccessions Project Link. While we are hoping you might find something in our Master List to supplement and enhance your own Collection, we would also like to provide you with more context about this Project:

The HCOC began a Textile Collection Inventory and Preservation Project in 2005. This was a two year endevour, with the result of a vastly improved knowledge of the scope of the Textile Collection along with a significant upgrade to the level of storage care provided for the same. During that time, Staff identified many multiples and duplicates from the Collection; items that were in poor condition were annotated and those that had no strong connection to Olmsted County history were also recognized. The above items were recommended for Deaccession, along with others that met some of the same criteria- and more- from the 3D Collection on a limited basis.

At the close of 2009 we took it upon ourselves to see the initial Project through, by fully processing those items that had been previously recommended for deacession. Each item was vetted, independently reviewed, and discussed according to its individual merit and its place in our Collections as a whole, using our Collections Policy and Mission as guidelines and backstops.  Please refer to our Deaccession Guidelines located in our Collections Policy on the next page for details and mechanics of the above process.

For the sake of transparency and the public record, we have chosen to announce this Project on a National, Regional and Local scale. It is our hope to preserve as many items as we can from this list in the spirit of original intent on behalf of our donors; to museums and like institutions of good standing, and with similar missions.

Please note that the majority of our object information is provided for you in the Master List spreadsheet. For inquiries about the transfer of items to your institution, and otherwise, please contact Tom Garcia, Curator of Collections, at curator@olmstedhistory.com. Negotiations are always welcome, however, we will ask that your organization assume all shipping costs to include postage and materials.

Have a good day,

Tom Garcia
HCOC Curator of Collections
