Twentieth Century & More Stations (6th grade only)

Stations

173 Airborne
Hear firsthand from a member of the 173rd Airborne about parachute jumping in combat. Since Korea, there have only been two mass combat parachute jumps, both made by the 173rd airborne that was adopted by the city of Rochester in 1966.

Anne and Al - Old Timey Music (45 minutes) -
Hear and participate in some good foot stompin' folk music.

Archaeology II (45 minutes)
Learn about advances in archaeology in the twentieth century. Practice archaeological techniques by digging up some artifacts.
Hands will get dirty.

Base Ball 1860s -
Students will play base ball with Roosters base ball players the way it was meant to be played following the rules of the 1860s

Cultures of Olmsted County
Experience one of many different cultures of Olmsted County. Community members from a variety of ethnic groups will contribute
to this learning station about our diverse region.

Dance Hall Days (45 minutes)
costumed dancers will perform early twentieth century dances, including Handjive, Charleston, Meringue, and Twist,
followed by Q & A and instruction.

Etiquette -
Learn about the strict rules that governed behavior in the late nineteenth century, the language of the fan and the language of flowers.

Inventions -
Do you have what it takes to be an inventor? Do you know about all of the marvelous things that have been invented in Minnesota? Find out!

Jack Pearson
Mr. Song Strummin' Storyman! will lead students in learning and singing song choruses, hand/lap rhythms and playing the spoons,
with an emphasis on twentieth century folk music.

Korean War
Veterans will share their experiences of serving in the Korean War.

Long Distance Communication
Students will learn how people communicated quickly over long distance before cell phones, instant messaging, radios and telegraph. Students will learn some Morse Code and send messages with a telegraph. Other topics include abbreviations, signaling with flags and lights, and encryption.


Medicine in the Early Twentieth Century
Students will explore the amazing advances in medicine that occurred during the early twentieth century. Emphasis will be placed on the influence of these changes on the people of Olmsted County and the influence of the people of Olmsted County on medicine.

Milking Cows
We drink milk everyday, but do you know what it takes to get that milk from grass to your refrigerator? Learn about the changes in milking technology and practice milking the old-fashioned way.

Phrenology
Meet Dr. Karl Verbesserungsvorschlagsversammlung, who will introduce students to phrenology, a popular science in the nineteenth century that claimed to be able to determine character, personality traits and criminality on the basis of the shape of the head. Students will practice reading the bumps on their heads (optional).

Photography -
Learn about the beginning of photography and the science of the art before the computer age.

Piccard Balloon Flight
Students will participate in a downscaled reenactment of Dr. Jean Piccard's balloon flight while learning about aeronautics and physics. Dr. Piccard believed it was possible to ascend into the stratosphere using many cluster balloons rather than one large balloon.

Pop-Up Technology -
Learn about the history of toasters and experience this essential technology first hand.

Radio Sound Effects
Learn how sound effects were made in the radio age, long before digital sound.

Reconstruction -
Experience the interplay of different viewpoints in post-war America. Discover how this period in American history affects us today.

Reptiles
Minnesota State Herpetological Society Educator associates will bring their cold-blooded friends to teach students about these creatures who are so important to our ecosystem.

Storytelling -
Learn stories of our region from the early twentieth century and learn how to tell stories of your own.

Telephone History
Learn about the history of the telephone from people who worked at the phone company and how it has changed our world. Try out some early equipment.

Thomas Lyles
Thomas Lyles (1843-1920) was an African American community activist and entrepreneur who broke a number of barriers. Students will learn about his work running businesses, his fight against racial discrimination. The migration of African Americans to Minnesota in the years following the Civil War will also be discussed.


Virginia Mae Hope
When you meet Virginia Mae Hope (1921-1944), you will hear exciting stories of women flying airplanes and serving their country during World War II. Virginia Mae Hope, a native of Winnebago, Minnesota, was a member of the Women Air force Service Pilots (WASP) during WW II. Hope was one of only 1,074 women to receive the WASP silver wings.

Victory Garden -
Learn from a Master Gardener about contributions of people on the homefront in WW I and WW II. Victory gardens were planned to help our country survive in hard times and to support the soldiers.

WW II from a child's viewpoint -
Learn about WW II from veterans who were really there. Learn about what life was like for young people during the war.

Learn about WW II from veterans who were really there. Learn about what life was like for young people during the war.

Learning stations will be added over the summer. Some stations may be deleted. Be prepared for some surprises!
