Oakwood Cemetery Walk
Actors in period costumes bring historic personalities, who helped forge Rochester's history, back to life for a day. This quality event, attended by over 400 people, included scripts featuring people from all walks of life.

Youth Advisory Board
Young people help out in many capacities at the History Center. Our Youth Advisory Board (YAB) sponsors two family events each year: Spring Fever and Hysterical Historical Halloween. The YAB is dedicated to getting more young people interested in history and active at the History Center.

Rochester Reads Great Speakers Program
Each year, the History Center participates in the Rochester Reads program by hosting a Great Speakers Event. Costumed actors portray historic people giving famous speeches or telling about their lives. In February of 2007, our theme was "Lesser Known Heroes."

Movies Under the Stars
Next summer we will again be showing movies on the side of the Historic Stoppel Farmstead Barn.

Comprehensive Interpretive Plan
With the input of community members, the History Center completed a Comprehensive Interpretive Plan (CIP). The CIP is a plan that outlines the themes that guide the interpretive programs for the History Center. "Olmsted County has connections to the world" was identified as the umbrella under which the three primary themes operate. They are:

  • Technological innovation in medicine (Mayo), machines (IBM) and agriculture developed and implemented here put Olmsted County on the map.
  • People, (those who migrate to, pass through, or make Olmsted County their home), work together to share cultures and build community. The people of Olmsted County utilize resources and impact the landscape in response to natural and historic events.
  • Innovation placed Rochester in the position of being an agent driving change, shifting rural to urban development and settlement, impacting land use, local economies, transportation, and ways of life in Olmsted County.

The project to develop the CIP was funded in part by a Museums for America Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), an independent Federal grant-making agency dedicated to creating and sustaining a nation of learners by helping libraries and museums serve their communities.
