Genealogy Resources

The following represents a comprehensive list of the resources available at the History Center. Some of these resources are searchable online and are indicated by underlined links.

All indices have been merged into the searchable biographical database. Please update your bookmarks.

  • Biographical index - cards
    Index cards with references to documents, photos, files, newspapers articles, books, etc.

  • Biographical index - database
    A continuation of the biographical card index in a database format.

  • Biographical, subject & business files
    Files contain various types of information including documents, letters, photos, diaries, family information, manuscripts, etc.

  • Cemetery records
    Cemetery inscriptions for all of Olmsted and Wabasha Counties; cemetery inscriptions for some areas of Dodge, Winona, Goodhue, Fillmore & Houston counties; burial records for Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester.

  • Census
    Federal census for the entire state of Minnesota for 1850, 1857 for Olmsted County only, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930 (printed index for 1860, 1870; Soundex for 1880, 1900 & 1920); Minnesota state census for entire state for 1865, 1875, 1885, 1895 & 1905.

  • City Directories
    Rochester City Directories from 1873 to 1997; including listings for Olmsted County; also miscellaneous directories for other counties and cities.

  • Colonial records
    DAR lineage books, various New England genealogical sources, Mayflower Families, Index to Rev. War Pensions, etc.

  • County histories
    Histories of Olmsted County for 1866, 1883 and 1910; Wabasha County History for 1920; county histories for selected other counties in Minnesota.

  • Family histories
    Emphasis on Olmsted County and Minnesota, but also includes many other family groups.

  • Funeral home records
    Records from Rochester: Madden, Vine, Cronin, Lawler, Harkness, Paine, Ranfranz; Stewartville: Griffin-Gray; Pine Island: Mahler

  • Guardianship records (Olmsted County)
    Files vary considerably in length and content.

  • Maps
    Plat maps of Olmsted County for 1868 to present; Sanborn insurance maps of Rochester for 1899, 1904, 1914, 1920 & 1928; maps of selected counties in Minnesota; Minnesota maps. The index for the 1868, 1878, 1896, 1914 plat maps has been merged into the searchable biographical database.

  • Military Resources
    This biographical index includes newspaper articles, scrapbooks, GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) records, Soldiers Field Veterans Memorial records, military information sheets and other miscellaneous records. Some people who never served in the military are mentioned when their name appears in a draft list, etc. Also included are family members when they are mentioned in the resource.

  • Newspapers
    Microfilm of Rochester newspapers from 1859 to present; selected newspapers from Byron, Chatfield, Dover, Elgin, Pine Island, St Charles, Stewartville and Zumbrota (Complete list of newspapers on microfilm at the History Center)
    Some indexing has been done after 1912 and these references have been incorporated in the general biographical search.

  • Newspapers index cards
    Index to Rochester newspapers from 1859 to 1912 only, (commissioned as a W.P.A. project). During this time period, the Rochester newspapers covered news for the entire county and surrounding areas. Subjects can be searched using the. The biographical index to early Rochester newspapers is currently being digitized and at the present time is only available on index cards in the library. While some surnames can be found in the subject index, the majority of the surnames are recorded in the biographical newspaper index.

  • Obituaries
    From the Rochester Post-Bulletin 1993-2006; misc. obituaries from other times periods have been indexed on a sporadic basis

  • Photographs
    Many miscellaneous photos of families, street scenes, businesses, activities as well as the extensive collections from the Cutshall Studio, Harold Hoffman Photographs, Potter Photography and Elle's Photography.

  • Probate records (Olmsted County)
    Most files will have approximately 10 to 20 pages of genealogical and personal information. Files vary, but most will include date and place of death, list of heirs and inventory of property.

  • School Annuals
    Rochester High School, John Marshall High School, Mayo High School, Century High School, Lourdes High School, Stewartville High School & Rochester Junior College; to selected misc. volumes.

  • Town histories
    Histories of Stewartville, Chatfield, Pleasant Grove, Chosen Valley, Rochester, Viola, Douglass and Oronoco.

  • Vital records
    Microfilm of early vital records (birth, death, marriage) from the courthouses of Blue Earth, Carver, Dodge, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Houston, Jackson, Lincoln, Mower, Nicollet, Olmsted, Pipestone, Rice, Scott, Steele, Wabasha, Waseca and Winona counties in Minnesota; Allamakee, Howard, Mitchell and Winneshiek in Iowa; for Olmsted County only.
